The Heart of French Surf

Le Pays
Basque

Biarritz Hossegor Guéthary ATLANTIC OCEAN

The Pays Basque is not just the best surf region in France — it's one of the great surf cultures of the world. Since the 1950s, when Californian filmmaker Peter Viertel first paddled out at Biarritz, this stretch of Basque coast has shaped European surfing.

The combination of Atlantic swells, volcanic reef, pine-forested dunes, and one of Europe's most distinctive cultural identities makes this coast unforgettable beyond the waves.

When to Go

THE SURF
Calendar

Prime Season
Hossegor
Sep–Nov brings the biggest, most consistent SW swells of the year. The WSL runs here in October for good reason — 6–10ft barrels on a good day.
Prime Season
Guéthary
Parlementia comes alive in October and November with deep-water NW groundswells. Clear skies, warm water, light crowds.
Prime Season
Lacanau
Best swell of the year coincides with the end of tourist season. The sandbanks are at their best after a summer of shaping.
Good Season
Hossegor
Powerful but stormy. 5/4mm wetsuit required. The hardcore locals have the peaks to themselves. Storms can bring 12ft+ surf.
Good Season
Biarritz
More sheltered than the open beach breaks. Protected coves like Côte des Basques offer rideable surf even in strong wind.
Fair Season
Lacanau
Exposed to full Atlantic storm swell. Can be spectacular or completely unsurfable. Worth checking but don't plan a trip around it.
Good Season
All Spots
NW swells continue into April. Water temp climbs from 14°C to 18°C. Crowds start building from Easter. 3/2mm wetsuit sufficient by May.
Good Season
Capbreton
The deep submarine canyon here channels spring swell reliably. Often works when the open beaches are messy.
Rising
Anglet
Spring sees good mix of swell and weather. The beach between Biarritz and Bayonne offers seven distinct breaks over 4km.
Flat Season
Biarritz
Small S swells only. Peak crowds. Best for beginners and longboarders. Water is warm (22°C+) and the Basque culture is in full swing.
Flat Season
All Landes
July–August is generally flat. The region still worth visiting for food, culture, and the odd surprise swell from distant Atlantic hurricanes.
Best Weather
Lacanau Pro
The Lacanau Pro runs in August — largest surf competition in France. Even in small waves it's a spectacle worth attending.
Vagues.
Vin.
Basque.

The French surf lifestyle is inseparable from the land. After a morning session at Hossegor, pintxos in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a glass of Irouléguy in the afternoon — this coast feeds the soul beyond the surf.
